    Official Language

Dhivehi is the official language of the Maldives. While many Maldivians working in the tourism industry speak English, learning a few basic Dhivehi phrases can be appreciated by locals.

    Learn Basic Phrases:

    Hello: Assalaamu Alaikum (Ah-sah-laa-mu ah-laa-i-kum)

    Thank you: Shukuriyaa (Shoo-koo-ree-ya)

    Yes: Aan (Ahn)

    No: Noon (Noon)

    Please: Adhi (Ah-dee)

    Excuse me / Sorry: Ma-aafu kurey (Maah-aah-foo koo-ray)

    Goodbye: Baajjeveri haa-e hihgaa (Bah-jay-ve-ree hah-ay hee-gah)

    Learn Dive-Related Terms:

If you plan to go diving, snorkeling, or engage in water sports, learn some dive-related terms in Dhivehi. This can help ensure your safety and enjoyment.

    Dive: Bajjeh (Bah-jay)

    Snorkel: Munaa (Moo-naa)

    Shark: Mako (Mah-koh)

    Fish: Mas (Mahs)

    English Language

English is widely spoken, especially in the hospitality and tourism sector. You can comfortably communicate in English at most resorts and popular tourist areas.

    Dress Code

Dress modestly when visiting local islands or religious sites. Swimwear is appropriate on resort islands but should be covered up when leaving the beach or pool area.

    Photography Etiquette

Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially in local villages. Some may prefer not to be photographed.

    Hand Gestures

Pointing with your finger is considered impolite. Instead, use your thumb.

    Tipping

Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. In resorts, a service charge is often included in the bill, but it’s common to leave small tips for good service.

    Bargaining:

Bargaining is not a common practice in the Maldives, especially in resorts and established shops. However, in local markets, you can try to negotiate prices politely.

    Currency and Money

The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the local currency. However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted in resorts and tourist areas. Credit cards are also widely used. Familiarize yourself with numbers in Dhivehi to help with shopping and negotiating prices.

    One: Ekaa (Ay-kaa)

    Two: Dhekih (Dheh-kee)

    Three: Thini (Thee-nee)

    Four: Hathaara (Ha-thaa-ra)

    Five: Fahuge (Faa-hoo-gay)

    Emergency Phrases

It’s a good idea to know emergency phrases in case you need assistance. “Madhadhu vun” means “I need help,” and “Haalu kurey” means “Call the police.”

    Religion and Customs

The Maldives is a Muslim-majority country, and Islamic customs are observed. It’s respectful to dress modestly and be aware of prayer times, especially during Ramadan.

    Travel Etiquette

Be mindful of the environment and practice responsible tourism. Respect the fragile marine ecosystems by not touching or damaging coral and dispose of your waste properly.

    Language Apps

Consider using language translation apps or travel phrasebooks to help with communication.

By learning a few basic Dhivehi phrases and being respectful of the local culture, you can enhance your travel experience in the Maldives and build meaningful connections with the people you meet during your journey.
