When it comes to pet care 101, getting the right type of towel, which is great for your pet’s skin and fur is essential. Going to the supermarket and just getting any type of towel will not cut it, which is why knowing the qualities of the towel fabric before committing to them is ideal for overall successful grooming sessions.

The top two towel fabrics usually sought after for dog grooming are microfiber and cotton because of their top material qualities like moisture absorption level and speed. But which of these two towel materials are more absorbent?

    Keep reading to find out.

    Microfiber Towels

Microfiber towels are not made from natural materials but from fine artificially manufactured fibres obtained from polyester or polyester blends. This has its advantage as such polyester fibres come higher in density than some natural fibres, which makes microfiber towels absorb water and other liquids more than 7x its weight.

Microfiber towels also lose water as quickly as they absorb it, which confirms their quick drying properties. This makes microfiber towels the best choice for travel, pool, and hotel use and generally frequent use. This also makes it great for easily soaking up excess water after bathing your pooch.

They are also a durable choice and can withstand multiple washes without falling apart. Some microfiber towel come with specific washing instructions, which might make proper washing and cleaning a hassle, but they nonetheless can get deep cleansed by hand washing and the right machine-washing settings, so you don’t have to bother about your dog’s hygiene.

    Cotton Towels

Cotton towels, as the name suggests, are produced from natural cotton fibres and are not synthetic like microfiber towels. This contributes to their breathability and makes them a great choice when comfort is the priority.

Cotton towels are very easy to wash, making them a durable and long-lasting choice and, hence, not necessary to replace too often. The caveat to washing, however, is not to wash dark-coloured cotton towels with lighter ones, as the dark colours may run and ruin the colours of the lighter towels.

Another beneficial feature of cotton towels is their accessibility. They are easy to get and are not pricey to purchase, which means you can get a good cotton dog towel on a budget.

Microfiber vs. Cotton Towels: Which is more absorbent

While both types of towels are great in their rights and may be preferred over each other depending on their distinct qualities, microfiber dog towels have proven to absorb more water and spills generally faster than cotton towels due to the density of the synthetic fibres on the fabric. While cotton towels have good absorbent qualities, they absorb moisture significantly slower than their microfiber counterparts due to the latter’s microfibers, which are much smaller than cotton’s. Similarly, cotton dries more slowly than microfiber and is therefore not a great choice when you want your dog towel drying completely within a short period. Which towel do you prefer for your dog? Cotton or microfiber dog towel?
