Motoring tips to help you save money

The cost of motoring seems to be endlessly increasing, as does the cost of many other aspects of life at the minute. Finding ways to reduce your expenses can help to give you more wiggle room in your budgets.

Fortunately, there are always ways you can save on motoring. You just need to know where to look and what to do. Read on to find out more!

    Don’t neglect basic maintenance

It may sound counterintuitive, but it’s often smart to spend money to save money on motoring. Investing in servicing and maintenance can significantly reduce the likelihood that you’ll suffer a more costly breakdown down the line.

An annual service alongside your legally-required MOT will cost you between £100 and £200 on average, but you could save significantly more in the long term.

Don’t forget to invest time in DIY maintenance. This involves checks like topping up fluids and looking after your car’s exterior to prevent permanent bodywork damage. Keep tyres inflated to the appropriate pressures to optimise fuel efficiency and safety.

Shop around online for all things motoring

Comparing prices online is a fantastic way to save on all kinds of motoring costs. Companies selling online often have to compete heavily on price, so you can find some great deals just by looking.

You can book your MOT online and find the best deals for packages with servicing included to kill two birds with one stone. Sourcing parts and tyres online also helps to bring down the overall cost of repairs, which can be extortionate. Costs like insurance should be compared online before you agree to a certain policy, hopefully helping you to significantly reduce your premiums for the year.

Consider how many cars you need as a family

Some of the biggest savings can be made by reconsidering your motoring habits altogether. Are you currently running two or more vehicles as a household? Could you survive with fewer? These sorts of questions are important to ask. Sacrificing some convenience for the sake of money saving could be worth it, or it may not – that all depends on your circumstances.

If you do still need multiple cars as a family or household, consider if you could save by combining insurance or breakdown cover policies.

    Find the cheapest pump prices

There are very handy apps these days that track petrol and diesel pump prices, so you can see the cheapest station in your area. This may only save you a few pence per litre each time you fill up, but these savings can accumulate to something much greater in the future.

There’s no need to drive out of your way for lower prices because you’ll spend more than you save getting there, but knowing where your cheapest option is will always be worthwhile.
