Vladimir Yevtushenkov: Biography of his early years
Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich was born in a small rural settlement where his parents worked at a local dairy plant. His father was the head of the agricultural enterprise, while his mother was an ordinary worker.
In his childhood, he had a passion that determined the future of his biography. Vladimir Yevtushenkov often conducted chemistry experiments at home and dreamed of one day running his own laboratory as an accomplished scientist. Vladimir Yevtushenkov’s dream partially came true.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov decided to apply to MSU in the chemistry department, but he failed the entrance exams. He thus went to serve in the military, and after his discharge, Yevtushenkov Vladimir gave college another try, and he was accepted to the Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technology.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich: Career in the chemical industry
Yevtushenkov Vladimir was assigned a place to work after graduating from college, which was a normal practice at the time. Graduates were practically guaranteed employment, and companies had a steady flow of personnel. The young specialist Yevtushenkov Vladimir was sent to Dzerzhinsk, one of the “capitals” of the domestic chemical industry, where several plants were located.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov started working at the Sverdlov Plant as a foreman and quickly rose to the position of workshop manager in just a few years. In 1975, Yevtushenkov Vladimir was invited to the capital to work at the Karacharov Plastic Plant. He worked there for more than ten years and held top positions, including chief engineer, deputy director, and first deputy general director. During this period, he developed a technology that contributed to the improvement of production indicators.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich made another attempt to enroll at MSU, and this time he was accepted and earned a degree in economics. In 1986, he earned a PhD in economic sciences from the Serge Ordzhonikidze Institute of Management (now the State University of Management) for his work devoted to improving preparatory economic and organizational measures for the production of plastics.
Continuing his career biography, Vladimir Yevtushenkov moved beyond the chemical industry.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov: AFK Sistema’s foundation
Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich was one of many mid-level and senior managers who decided to try their hand at business during the country’s transition to a market economy. In the somewhat turbulent year of 1993, he and a group of partners founded the joint stock financial corporation Sistema.
Today, many well-known brands in the local market and neighboring countries are part of AFK Sistema (Vladimir Yevtushenkov initially focused on a wide range of niches in the consumer sector).
As AFK developed, it responded sensitively to the demand among the population, which objectively expanded due to the change in the economic system. The corporation started with real estate and telecommunications at a time when such services and offerings were becoming more accessible to consumers.
In the 1990s, representatives of the public sector faced economic difficulties. Meanwhile, more and more people were working in the private sector, which was growing economically. For example, there was a demand for a wide selection of high-quality children’s goods.
At the initiative of Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema acquired a children’s goods retail chain. Once an important player in domestic retail, it was struggling by the mid-1990s. With the arrival of the investor, the stores transformed into a modern retailer and hundreds of locations were opened at home and in several other neighboring countries. In 2017, the network went public on the local stock exchange. Over time, AFK ceased to be one of the owners of the chain.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov noted that representatives of the emerging middle class and individuals with even higher income levels were also willing to pay for high-quality modern medical services provided in comfortable conditions, though the state healthcare system largely failed to meet these demands. Although there were paid services available in decent state institutions, there was still a clear demand for private medicine, and entrepreneurs responded, including Vladimir Yevtushenkov. AFK Sistema thus acquired just a one clinic in the mid-1990s, which eventually evolved into a large-scale national network clinics. Today, the network has up to 10 million visits per year and offers services including consultations with various specialists (with more than 4,000 specialists overall), medical tests, home visits, vaccinations, and surgeries. The network includes more than 130 clinics throughout the country.
AFK Sistema (Vladimir Yevtushenkov initiated this decision) went further in the healthcare world, entering the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Several enterprises were purchased and formed into a holding, following Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich’s idea of asset consolidation. The holding has several production sites and over four hundred permits to produce different medications that it supplies to both domestic and foreign pharmacy chains. A number of CIS countries have shown a steady increase in the demand for medicines after the coronavirus pandemic.
Hotel services is another consumer market sector that has been rapidly changing with the arrival of private investments and effective management, which caught the eye of Vladimir Yevtushenkov. AFK Sistema entered this field in the 2000s, at a time when the country’s hotel industry did not live up to the standards of the modern market.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov participated in the corporation’s 2006 acquisition of a hotel that had been built to accommodate foreign delegations to the 1980 Olympic games. The project was implemented with the participation of French architects and Yugoslav builders. At the time, it was a very modern and convenient hotel (key cards, bowling, technical conditions for conference communication), but by the beginning of the 21st century, it had become outdated. The corporation took on its renovation, and under Vladimir Yevtushenkov, AFK Sistema formed a hotel management company, significantly expanding its portfolio by taking over existing hotels and building new ones. The Group includes about 20 hotels with thousands of rooms and employees today.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov: Dealing with COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic was a serious challenge for countries around the world, requiring the cooperation of volunteers, other countries, and the business community. Many major business groups and entrepreneurs throughout the country took up the fight against the infection.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir and his corporation were no exception.
The corporation’s assets contributed however they could. To address the severe shortage of medical masks in the country, the a textile combine started producing the necessary fabric for their production, and a Sistema retail clothing company organized the sewing of reusable masks. When state hospitals were overwhelmed, the medical network quickly transformed one of its facilities into a COVID hospital. Later, a post-COVID rehabilitation system was developed within the network. Doctors and other “red zone” healthcare workers needed somewhere to sleep overnight, and the hotel company provided room for their accommodation.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich had initiated the formation of a timber holding that then assisted in the local hospital during the pandemic. It procured much needed oxygen cylinders and offered relief to the overloaded public transport system by paying for taxis for doctors who had to make many more visits than usual.
Sistema’s pharmaceutical assets also made a significant contribution by developing and implementing COVID test systems and producing a COVID vaccine at one of their facilities.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir has spoken of the pandemic period as a serious challenge.
