When it comes to a good action movie, it’s all subjective. In the past, the genre was scattered across genres, from superhero soaps to blockbusters. But the genre has branched out to cover every type of effect-addled genre under the sun. So which one is the best? Here are some of my personal favorites. You may find one of them new to you. But do let me know what you think of them!
Mission Impossible
After the Pixar hit “The Incredibles,” director Brad Bird brought fresh energy to the Mission Impossible franchise. He introduced more humor, and raised the stakes. Now, Mission Impossible is as good as ever, thanks to Tom Cruise’s newfound success as a spy. The new film is an action-packed thriller with an epic helicopter chase. While “Mission: Impossible III” doesn’t break any new ground in terms of action-movie genre, it’s still one of the best.
Inception
Inception is a trippy, high-tech blockbuster directed by Christopher Nolan. This film is one of Nolan’s most unique films. It features a highly original idea and many crazy action sequences. Although the movie takes place in dreams, it is still very action-packed and gripping. In addition to its thrilling action scenes, Inception also has a great storyline. It is a must-see for any action movie fan!
Rambo
Sylvester Stallone brings back his iconic character in this fourth installment of the Rambo franchise. In Rambo IV, John Rambo is in Thailand fighting alongside mercenaries. It’s packed with action and is so intense that it plays more like a first-person shooter than a film. Stallone, already a big star when he signed on for this project, becomes even bigger in this remake.
Snowpiercer
While many movies are based on real events, Snowpiercer takes its genre to a whole new level. The sci-fi adventure is action-packed, funny, and dramatic. Director Bong Joon-ho has established himself as a world-class science-fiction director with a stunning movie. Its stunning imagery and pacing are perfectly balanced with a perfect amount of violence.
Bourne Identity
If you’re looking for an action movie that is both gripping and realistic, The Bourne Identity is it. Its cinematography sets the tone for the franchise, with a style that emulates the style of a journalist. The fighting scenes are fast and visceral, and are shot from close-ups. There are some great scenes of hand-to-hand combat, like when Bourne breaks a man’s knee and stabs him repeatedly with a pen.
